About the museum

Vamdrup owes its rise to the border: after the war of 1864, the Kongeå formed the state border with Prussian Schleswig, and in 1866 a border station was opened between the villages of Øster and Vester Vamdrup, where Danish and German staff worked. It developed into one of the largest stations in Denmark; stately villas for the senior officials were built along Jernbanegade.

The Kongeåmuseet was founded in 1973 and was initially housed in the old school of Øster Vamdrup. In 1985 it moved into the former official villa of the stationmaster from 1899. On the upper floor the local history archive of Vamdrup also works today, which also helps with family research.

The exhibitions are devoted to the border at the Kongeå, both the state border of 1864–1920 and the older customs border between North Jutland and Schleswig, and to the reunification of 1920. A highlight is the large computer-controlled model of the border station as it was around 1920, at a scale of 1:87, built from original DSB plans and maintained by the local railway club. Further rooms show Vamdrup under the German occupation of 1940–45, a classroom, an old kitchen, the parlor of the Vandmøllegården, as well as toys, dollhouses, and needlework.

The museum is run by volunteers by the Historisk Forening in Vamdrup, whose members have free admission. The association also organizes lectures, events, and activities for children and adults.
