Panser- & Artillerimuseum
Denmark's largest collection of armored vehicles and guns from the Middle Ages to the Cold War in Oksbøl near Varde.
About the museum
The museum combines two collections under one roof. The tank collection goes back to old vehicles that were first stationed at Oksbøl Nord camp and in 1982 moved to the newly built Army Combat School (Hærens Kampskole) at Oksbøl Syd camp. Officially it is called Hærens Kampskoles Køretøjshistoriske Samling and includes nearly every type of main battle tank that the Danish Army has used since 1945.
The artillery collection was created in 1984 around the barracks in Varde, opened in 1992 as Varde Artilleri Museum, and has been a specialized artillery museum since 2005. From about 2008, the tank collection received exhibition space in the former fire brigade museum on Industrivej in Oksbøl. When that closed in 2020 and the artillery museum was looking for a new location, both collections moved into the building complex together.
Today the Vardemuseerne operate the building as Panser- & Artillerimuseum, and the tank section is looked after by an association of the Combat School. On display are main battle tanks and armored personnel carriers, wheeled Army vehicles, and cannons ranging from the oldest pieces found on Danish soil through bronze guns of the age of absolutism to Cold War weapons. Many vehicles can be viewed up close; on action days, individual tanks are demonstrated in motion.
