Copenhagen Amber Museum
Small amber museum in the Kanneworffs Hus of 1606 on Kongens Nytorv, with insect inclusions, historic amber and a polishing workshop.
About the museum
The Copenhagen Amber Museum is run by the Danish jewelry company House of Amber and is located in one of the oldest houses in Copenhagen: the Kanneworffs Hus at the corner of Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn. The house was built in 1606 and is thus older than the square Kongens Nytorv and the Nyhavn canal. Over the centuries, barbers, tobacco spinners, carpenters and grocers lived and worked here. In 1836 the wool and cloth merchant Lars Kanneworff acquired the building and set up a fine tailor's shop in it; the house is named after him. Today the facade bears the lettering "Ravhuset."
On the ground floor is an amber jewelry shop; the museum is housed on the upper floor. The collection shows plants and insects that were trapped in resin about 30 to 50 million years ago, along with rare amber antiques and archaeological finds that tell of the role of Nordic amber as a trade good in Europe.
In a demonstration workshop you can watch how goldsmiths make jewelry from raw amber. Visitors can also choose a raw piece of their own there and have it polished, whereby cracks and inclusions in the material become visible.
