About the museum

The VW & Retro Museum in Ulfborg is a privately run museum of the couple Sussi and Carsten, which grew out of a passion for collecting. Carsten grew up with a car dealer for a father who restored and resold Beetles; after they had sold an earlier 1303 convertible as not very family-friendly, the two acquired another such model from 1973 in 2003, which now stands in the museum in its original color, Olympic Blue.

The following year they acquired a rare Westfalia camper van of type SO 36 from 1963, which they restored over the years with original parts, down to re-woven fabrics. The van, nicknamed "Bertha", won prizes at meetings throughout Europe; only 25 examples of this model are said to have been built worldwide. At the same time, Sussi began collecting everyday objects from her childhood in second-hand shops until the garage was full.

After several open house days, the couple opened the official museum in 2015 with a newly built hall and later expanded it into the neighboring building. Today the collection comprises around 20 Volkswagens from 1949 to the 1990s, trailers, caravans, mopeds, and bicycles, as well as numerous retro settings – from a general store to a photo shop and a B&O shop to a donated foot care practice.
