About the museum
The August Kitzbergi tubamuuseum opened in 1983 in the former municipal office building of Pöögle in the village of Leeli, where the writer August Kitzberg (1855–1927) worked as municipal clerk. His brother Jaan Kitzberg also lived and worked here. The museum’s beginnings go back to 1952, when Leili Kirik, a teacher at Maie primary school, set up a local history corner at the school; since 1959 Asta Jaaksoo has collected material on the writer.
The exhibition presents the Kitzberg family, the writer’s work and the restored municipal clerk’s workroom. The museum operates in cooperation with the Kitzberg Friends Society, which organises birthday celebrations as well as literary and nature hikes.
