About the museum
Kaarlo "Kulta-Kalle" Kangasniemi was born on 4 February 1941 in the village of Leineperi in Kullaa, the ninth child of Juho and Alma Kangasniemi. Juho Kangasniemi was the village blacksmith of the Leineperi ironworks. Kaarlo became Finland's first Olympic weightlifting champion at the Mexico City Olympics in 1968.
In 1988 Kangasniemi donated his awards, hoping they would come to be displayed in his birth home in Leineperi. The Kullaan Kotiseutu- ja Museoyhdistys (Kullaa Local Heritage and Museum Association) founded and maintains the Kangasniemi Museum, which is Finland's eighth sports museum.
The museum operates in a small cottage of two rooms and a kitchen, where the Kangasniemi parents lived with their eleven children. The original furniture and interior are on display.
