About the museum
The Fondation Azzedine Alaïa is located at 18 rue de la Verrerie in the Marais, where couturier Azzedine Alaïa lived and worked. He wanted to create a foundation in his own house to hold his collections of fashion, art and design, as well as his archives.
In 2007, Azzedine Alaïa founded the Association Azzedine Alaïa with painter Christoph von Weyhe and publisher and gallerist Carla Sozzani, in order to protect his work and his art collection. The association became the Fondation Azzedine Alaïa, recognized as a public-interest foundation by decree of February 28, 2020. The logo was designed by Julian Schnabel.
The site brings together several buildings around a glass-roofed inner courtyard. At the far end of the courtyard is the large exhibition gallery, where the couturier once presented his fashion shows, and a second exhibition room occupies the second floor. The courtyard also houses a bookshop devoted to fashion, art, design and literature, as well as a café-restaurant.
The Foundation preserves and presents the work of Azzedine Alaïa and the fashion, art and design pieces he collected. It organizes two exhibitions a year, publishes books and supports educational programs, scholarships and lectures.
