About the museum

After the Allied landings in North Africa in November 1942, Germany had the “Mur de la Méditerranée” (Mediterranean Wall) built along the coast. In Agde, around a hundred bunkers were built; some thirty survive on the site of the La Tamarissière bunkers, an area where a landing was feared. Bunker 638 served as a field infirmary for wounded soldiers.

The association Agde Histoire 39-45 reopened and restored it. In particular, it recreated the room for “serious” patients as an original hospital room, and the guard room with period equipment and mannequins. An exhibition presents the German organization in the region, the life of the people of Agde, the construction of the bunkers and the stages of the restoration.

The site also includes bunker 610, a command post. According to the local press, bunker 638 is the only bunker of this type open to visitors on the Mediterranean coast.
