About the museum
The museum is housed in a mansion in Pézenas. It offers a rare view of an interior as the Countess of Saint-Germain arranged it at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The state rooms are decorated in the fashion of the period. The collection comes from a bequest by François de Vulliod; it became a municipal museum in 1942 and now carries the designation “Musée de France”. Donations have enriched it, in particular that of Dr Bastard, a doctor and collector of the early 20th century.
The rooms contain 17th-century Aubusson tapestries, made after cartoons by Charles Le Brun, which tell the story of Alexander the Great. There is also regional furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries, including Louis XIII-style cabinets, as well as sculptures, paintings, drawings, pastels and prints from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. One room is devoted to a collection of 18th-century faience from the workshops of Moustiers, Montpellier and Marseille.
The museum also preserves traces of the Molièrisme movement, launched by Albert Paul Alliès in 1893 after an earlier impetus from the town in 1836. It holds objects connected with Molière’s stay in Pézenas, including a painted medallion showing him as Saint John the Baptist, and the famous “observatoire” armchair, acquired through a national subscription.
