About the museum
The Strasbourg graphic arts collection began to take shape at the end of the 19th century as a complement to the paintings of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, before becoming an independent department. It was first housed in a wing of the Palais Rohan, and in 1918 it received the documentary collection of the Musée Hohenlohe.
In 1984 the cabinet moved to 5 place du Château, where it remained for some forty years. In 1995 the modern works were assigned to a graphic arts department at the Musée d’Art moderne et contemporain, while the Alsatian holdings and the portraits remained in the historic collection.
Today the cabinet is located in the Pôle d’étude et de conservation of the Musées de la Ville de Strasbourg, at the Port du Rhin, close to the digitisation, framing and restoration workshops. It holds drawings and prints from the 15th to the mid-19th century from the Italian, Northern and German schools, ornament prints, designs for goldsmiths’ work, views and portraits connected with Strasbourg and Alsace, as well as popular prints and 19th-century Alsatian lithographs.
