About the museum
The Musée Tomi Ungerer – Centre international de l’illustration opened in 2007 in the Villa Greiner, a 19th-century villa in Strasbourg. It presents itself as the first museum in France dedicated solely to illustration drawing of the 20th and 21st centuries, and has held the Musée de France label since 2008.
Tomi Ungerer (1931–2019), born in Strasbourg, has given a large part of his work to his native city since 1975. He worked for children’s publishing, advertising and satirical drawing, and also created collages and sculptures. His well-known books include “Les Trois Brigands”.
The collection comprises about 14,000 drawings by the artist, some 1,500 toys from his personal collection, and more than 2,000 works by other French and foreign illustrators. Because works on paper are sensitive to light, the displays change three times a year and present different themes drawn from Ungerer’s work and the wider collection. The museum also organizes monographic and thematic exhibitions devoted to other artists.
