About the museum

The centre is housed in the premises of the tourist information office in Murat-sur-Vèbre, in the Monts de Lacaune. It presents the world of the first farmers and herders of the Neolithic, who lived around 3,500 BCE and carved and erected statue-menhirs of the Rouergat group.

These stones were carved and set up towards the end of prehistory, between about 3,300 and 2,200 BCE. They depict male or female figures. Their meaning remains a mystery, and the museum presents the main hypotheses put forward by researchers.

Two large rooms bring together about a dozen statue-menhirs. At the end of the visit, you can pick up a map of a megalith trail in the commune.
