About the museum

The museum was created in 1983 by Robert Pistre, with the support of the Haut-Languedoc Regional Nature Park. It occupies the former sharecroppers' house and the main building of the Rieumontagné farm, and it developed gradually thanks to the Centre de recherches du patrimoine de Rieumontagné. The arrival of the lake, after the construction of the Laouzas dam, transformed the site and encouraged its growth.

Over more than 1,600 m², the collections range from geology to traditional know-how and include reconstructed scenes of everyday life. They cover local history from the Neolithic period to the building of the dam. A mineral collection greets visitors at the entrance.

The route, which can be followed with QR codes, leads from the bread oven, hemp processing and washing with wood ash to agricultural tools, statue-menhirs and the control panel of the dam. A children's area presents the kitchen, the cobbler's workshop and the toy attic.
