About the museum
The château was completed in 1661 and passed in 1667 to the De Kessel family, lords of Flers, until 1747. It then went to Philippe André de Baudequin, and later to Count Ladislas de Diesbach, the last lord of Flers. During the Revolution the château was not confiscated, but it was damaged and converted into a farm. In 1937 Paul Delesalle-Dewas bought it from the De Diesbach family.
With its brick, stone quoins and stepped gables, this rural château is typical of 17th-century Flemish architecture. Around 1787 the windows, ceilings and fireplaces were altered, and the drawbridge gave way to the current bridge. The château has been listed as a monument historique since 1951.
The State has owned it since 1969. The public development agency Lille Est bought it in 1973 and carried out conservation work in 1974–1975 and 1979. The town of Villeneuve-d’Ascq bought the château in 1986 and carried out interior fitting-out from 1986 to 1991. Only the west wing and the former main building remain today, both fully restored.
Four rooms in the basement form the Musée du Château de Flers, which hosts temporary exhibitions. The château also houses a reception hall, several municipal departments and the tourist office.
