About the museum

The Château de Laàs, in Béarn, houses a museum that evokes the way of life of an 18th-century noble house. In 1946 the collectors Louis and Madeleine Serbat bought the estate and gathered furniture, paintings, tapestries and fine tableware there.

The state has owned the château since 1980. According to the department's tourist information, its management is entrusted to the Conseil départemental of Pyrénées-Atlantiques. The visit is by guided tour only: visitors move from room to room as if they were guests, with no display cases to keep them at a distance.

The collection includes paintings by Brueghel, Fragonard and Vigée Le Brun, tapestries from the Gobelins and Aubusson royal manufactories, porcelain from Sèvres, Paris and Tournai, and crystal from Saint-Louis and Baccarat. Rooms visited include the gentlemen's salon, the ladies' salon, the music room and the library. A ten-hectare park surrounds the château.
