About the museum

The castle was built at the end of the 12th century by Pierre V de la Garnache, the first known lord of the site, and is first mentioned in a document from 1205, the founding charter of the La Blanche abbey. It served as a symbol of feudal power, as a residence, a fortress and later a prison. The keep, whitewashed with lime, also served as a landmark for sailors.

The site went through several notable episodes: the landing of a Dutch fleet in 1674, the internment of foreign civilians during the First World War, occupation by the German army in 1940–1944 and, above all, the Vendée Wars, during which the island changed hands several times until the execution of General d’Elbée in January 1794.

The town bought the castle in 1901 to protect it and set up a first museum there in 1905. This grew considerably from the 1930s and 1950s thanks to the association Les Amis de l’île de Noirmoutier. Listed as a monument historique since 1994 and labelled “Musée de France”, the museum presents collections across several floors that tell the island's history from prehistory to the 19th century. Each year the town organises a new exhibition, and it has been restoring the ramparts since 2020.
