About the museum

The ecomuseum is housed in the Bintinais farm, south of Rennes. This farming estate is recorded from the 17th century and covered more than 60 hectares at the end of the 19th century. It lost much of its land as the city grew, and the last farmer retired in 1982.

The museum project was born in the 1980s: the site opened to the public on May 23, 1987 as the Écomusée du Pays de Rennes, initially as an annex of the Musée de Bretagne. It has carried its current name since December 2020, and was awarded the Musée de France label in 2003.

In the old farmhouse, the museum presents five centuries of the history of Rennes and its countryside across about 1,200 m²: housing, daily life, earth construction, crops and cider. Around it, the site has a herd of local breeds conserved since 1994, conservation orchards of about 120 apple varieties, and a kitchen garden.
