About the museum

Founded in 1969 near the banks of the Loc'h, the Écomusée de Saint-Dégan is run by an association. Its mission is to pass on the knowledge and skills linked to traditional farming in the Pays d'Auray. In recent years it has embarked on a renewal focused on the region's societal issues, built around three missions: conserving the built heritage and collections, helping people discover and understand a culture, and reaching diverse audiences.

The site recreates the atmosphere of the farming world before 1950. The old chaumières, with rye-straw roofs and traditional timber frames, house furniture and everyday objects. The trail also crosses the bocage, with its sunken lanes, paths, orchards and heathland, as well as a rye plot sown on a “journal” (an old unit of land area).

Several exhibition rooms complete the visit, such as the “territoire” room on the traditional farming system and the “landes” room on the many uses of the heathland. The Écomusée holds the Musée de France label: its collections and chaumières are listed in the museum's inventory.
