About the museum

La Cohue is a former market hall of the Dukes of Brittany, whose oldest parts date from the 13th century. The ground floor housed the market and the upper floor the ducal court of justice. In the 17th century, the Parlement of Brittany sat here during its exile in Vannes. The city has owned it since 1813, turned it into a theatre and restored it from 1970.

The Musée des beaux-arts opened here in 1982 to display the municipal collections of paintings and prints, previously shown at the Hôtel de Limur. It holds the “Musée de France” label.

The collections include paintings by Henry Moret, Joseph-Félix Bouchor, Émile Jourdan and Jean Frélaut, a Christ on the Cross by Eugène Delacroix, prints (including etchings by Goya) and contemporary works. Since a donation in 2013, a permanent space has been dedicated to the painter Geneviève Asse.

The City of Vannes has announced that the museum will close at La Cohue on October 31, 2026, subject to change, and reopen at the Château de l’Hermine site, expected around 2028.
