About the museum

Arthur Batut lived in Labruguière at the end of the 19th century. He is known as the inventor of kite aerial photography. In 1984, members of the study association SERAHL, looking for old photographs of Labruguière, tracked down his collection among his descendants, who had kept photographs and objects.

The Musée Arthur Batut was inaugurated in 1988, for the centenary of kite aerial photography, in a building provided by the town hall. In 2001, the photographer’s great-grandchildren gave the entire collection to the association, on condition that it remain on display at the museum. In 2009, the association became the Espace photographique Arthur Batut.

In 2013, the Espace photographique moved into the Le Rond-Point cultural center. The collection has since entered the public domain and is now the property of the Tarn département; it remains preserved and displayed in Labruguière. It comprises about 10,000 items, including 5,000 photographic plates of portraits, trades, rural scenes and tourist sites, as well as documents on the portrait-type and on kite aerial photography. Other collections and exhibitions of contemporary photographers complement the offer.
