About the museum
The Musée Jean Jaurès was created in 1954, for the fortieth anniversary of Jaurès's death, in the town hall of Castres, next to the Musée Goya. In 1987 it moved to Place Pélisson under the name Centre national et musée Jean Jaurès. It was inaugurated on November 24, 1988, by President François Mitterrand.
The route is chronological and thematic: it traces the life and work of Jean Jaurès through writings, newspapers, photographs and caricatures from the Third Republic. The museum is recognised as a “Musée de France”.
The centre also has a documentation centre, open by appointment, and a 48-seat auditorium where lectures and screenings related to Jaurès's era are held. It lends travelling exhibitions about Jean Jaurès and hosts temporary exhibitions with free admission.
