About the museum
The Courbet family farm is located in Flagey, on the Amancey plateau. The painter Gustave Courbet’s paternal grandfather acquired it, after which it passed to Régis Courbet, the painter’s father, who enlarged it and tried to modernise farming there. A farming family, the Bourgons, lived on the estate and worked it. After Régis died in 1882, his daughters Zoé and Juliette inherited the estate; Juliette sold it to the Bourgon family in 1910.
From 2000 onward, the idea of enhancing the site emerged after a brief presentation of the painting “Les Paysans de Flagey” on site. The house was then transferred for one euro to the Doubs Department, which restored it until July 2009, two years before the reopening of the Musée Courbet in Ornans.
Since July 2009, the farm has operated as a cultural venue. It has hosted more than thirty temporary exhibitions and nearly three hundred events, such as concerts, performances, lectures and theatre. A scientific and cultural project launched in 2020 makes it a laboratory for art, with a varied programme. The farm is part of the Pôle Courbet, together with the Musée Courbet and the Atelier Courbet in Ornans.
