About the museum
The Fondation Maeght was founded by Aimé and Marguerite Maeght, publishers and art dealers. After the death of their son Bernard in 1953, Georges Braque encouraged the couple to create a place for art on their property in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Artists close to the couple, such as Braque, Miró and Giacometti, took part in the thinking behind the project.
The Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert designed a complex of courtyards, terraces and galleries that opens onto nature and Mediterranean light. The foundation was inaugurated on July 28, 1964 by André Malraux and presents itself as the first private art institution in France.
The site combines exhibitions, a garden and works integrated into the architecture: the Giacometti courtyard, Miró's labyrinth, Braque's pool, Pol Bury's fountain, and monumental mosaics by Chagall and Tal Coat. The modern art collection comprises about 13,000 works, including pieces by Braque, Miró, Calder, Chagall and Léger. Nicolas Gitton has directed the foundation since 2018.
