About the museum
The Musée national du Sport was founded in 1963 at the request of Maurice Herzog, then in charge of sport, to gather testimony of sporting practice in France. It was first based in Paris, where it stayed until 2013. A public institution under the supervision of the ministry responsible for sport, it has held the “Musée de France” label since 2004.
The museum then moved to Nice, into the heart of the Allianz Riviera stadium, which hosts OGC Nice matches and major events all year round. It opened on June 27, 2014, in a layout designed by the architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte, and remains the only French national museum dedicated to sport.
The collections include nearly 45,000 objects and around 400,000 documents, from the 16th century to the present: equipment, shirts, trophies and medals, posters, works of art and archives. The permanent route, about 2,500 m², follows four great challenges (against oneself, one-on-one, collective, beyond limits) and ends at the Café des Aiglons, a space devoted to OGC Nice.
