About the museum
The Fonds régionaux d'art contemporain were created in 1982 as part of decentralization, to build public collections of contemporary art and make them known in every region. The Frac Sud is one of these funds; it presents its collection and exhibitions at the Cité de l'art contemporain.
Since 2013, the Cité de l'art contemporain has been located in the Joliette district of Marseille, in a building designed by the architecture firm Kengo Kuma. This second-generation project, backed by the Région Sud and the Ministry of Culture, was inaugurated during Marseille's year as European Capital of Culture, alongside the Mucem. The architect conceived a museum without walls, open to the city; its panels of recycled enamelled glass evoke Mediterranean light.
The site offers exhibitions, tours and workshops for all audiences, a bookshop at the entrance, an urban terrace and a café-restaurant.
