About the museum

The Musée Regards de Provence belongs to the Fondation Regards de Provence – Reflets de Méditerranée, founded in 1997 under the aegis of the Fondation de France by a Marseille couple of collectors and patrons. The foundation brings together works linked to Marseille, Provence and the Mediterranean, from the 18th century to the present day. It presented its collections at the Palais des Arts from 2005 to 2012 and also exhibited at the Château Borély.

The museum opened on March 1, 2013, the year Marseille-Provence was European Capital of Culture. It occupies the former port health station of Marseille, a building designed by the architect Fernand Pouillon that almost never served its original purpose. A restructuring entrusted to the architect Guy Daher preceded the opening. The steam room (salle des étuves) was kept in its original state and hosts an artistic documentary on the history of the building.

The collection comprises over 850 works, by artists such as Dufy, Monticelli, Valtat, Ziem, Manguin and Lhote. Each year the museum offers temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures and concerts. It was awarded the Tourisme & Handicap label for the second time, covering all four categories of disability.
