About the museum
Fort des Ayvelles was built in the late 1870s, after the defeat of 1870, to protect the Meuse valley and the railway linking Reims, Montmédy, Givet and Hirson. It is the only Ardennes work in the Séré de Rivières fortification system.
The fort has a square plan surrounded by a deep ditch. At the start of the 20th century, advances in explosive shells made its masonry vulnerable. In August 1914 the garrison sabotaged its weapons and evacuated the fort, which the German army occupied from August 29; the army then used it as an ammunition depot and later as a prison. French troops returned in November 1918.
In May 1940 the fort was bombarded again and then abandoned by its defenders. During the Occupation, several members of the Resistance were executed there.
Today the Association du Fort et de la Batterie des Ayvelles, made up of volunteers, maintains the site. The visit, free or guided, shows the échauguettes (watch turrets), the ditches, the battery and the events of summer 1914.
