About the museum
The house is a former inn in the village of Bazeilles, near Sedan. During the battle of August 31 and September 1, 1870, some fifty marine infantrymen held out there against Bavarian troops until they ran out of ammunition. The building still bears traces of the fighting, and the room where the last shot was fired is preserved in its original state.
According to the national museum notice, the site became a museum as early as the day after the fighting. It gathers mementoes collected on the battlefield or donated by descendants of soldiers: firearms, bladed weapons, helmets and equipment, uniforms and archives. Alphonse de Neuville’s painting “La Dernière Cartouche”, completed in 1873 and inspired by this episode, is its centrepiece.
The route covers the history of the house, the Franco-German War, the Battle of Sedan, the role of the village and the fighting at Bazeilles. A Franco-German ossuary lies about 300 metres away in the village cemetery. The museum holds the “Musée de France” designation.
