About the museum

Fort La Prée was built in 1626, under Louis XIII, to assert the king's authority on the Île de Ré. Located at the edge of La Flotte, towards Rivedoux, it overlooks the seafront. During the Second World War the island was occupied, a period covered by a permanent exhibition.

Today the fort can be visited freely, with a visitor guide and a map, or with a guide, who offers a daily tour on weekdays. A multilingual audioguide is available free of charge via a QR code given at the reception. The site also hosts activities, exhibitions and events, including a treasure hunt in summer.

The museum of ancient graffiti is housed in the former commandant's building. It displays engraved stones and casts of graffiti left by past generations, a collection presented by the association Histoire et Culture. It was installed at the fort after leaving Marsilly. Other permanent exhibitions cover the musketeers, prisons and piracy, among other topics.
