About the museum
The Institut Jean-Vigo, named after the French filmmaker Jean Vigo (1905–1934), grew out of popular education activities in Perpignan, notably the film club Les Amis du cinéma, founded in 1962. It was set up in 1983 on the initiative of Marcel Oms, as a continuation of the Institut de recherche et d’animation sur l’histoire du cinéma. As an association governed by the 1901 law, it is run by a volunteer team and a salaried team and receives support from local authorities and the State. It became a cinémathèque in 2006.
Over the years it launched the Confrontation festival, which has existed since 1965, published journals such as Archives, and carried out film education activities for primary, middle and secondary schools. It is housed in the Arsenal, at 1 rue Jean Vielledent, with a screening room, a media library and storage rooms.
The collections include more than 5,000 films in all formats, among them many amateur films from the region, and nearly 80,000 film posters from 1892 to the present day, recognised as being of national interest by the CNC. They include a Spanish holding of more than 4,000 posters and a digitised Polish holding. The Institute organises poster exhibitions, offers free guided tours of its collections and also runs a virtual museum of the film poster.
