About the museum

Joseph Puig, born in Perpignan in 1859 and died in 1929, assembled throughout his life a collection of coins, medals and objects of Catalan heritage. In 1907 he had the Villa Les Tilleuls built by the Danish architect Viggo Dorph-Petersen. He bequeathed his estate to the City of Perpignan on condition that the coin and medal collection be permanently displayed in this villa.

The Art Nouveau villa, located near the station, is surrounded by an English garden with a small Japanese bridge. The architect paid close attention to the details, from the front steps to the veranda and the wrought-iron staircase.

The bequest comprised around 30,000 pieces; the museum now holds 45,000, from all periods and many countries, from the earliest coins to the euro. The permanent display shows rare pieces: ancient and foreign coins, output from the Perpignan mint, other forms of money, medals, treasures and rare coins.
