About the museum
In November 1877, shortly after the death of Zélie Martin in Alençon, the Martin family moved to Lisieux and rented the house Les Buissonnets, somewhat apart from the town, on the road to Pont-l'Évêque. Thérèse spent eleven years there, until she entered the Carmel. She called this tree-surrounded house her “doux nid d'enfance” (sweet nest of childhood).
The house was bought in 1909 by a cousin of Thérèse and then served successive tenants. From 1911 it became a place of pilgrimage. In 1931 it was entrusted to the Oblates of Saint Thérèse.
The visit recalls several moments of Thérèse's childhood and adolescence: the dining room, where her first communion meal and the last meal before she entered the Carmel took place; the kitchen fireplace, linked to the grace of Christmas 1886; the statue in the garden; and the bedroom where she was healed in May 1883.
The sisters welcome visitors, pilgrims and tourists every day. Visitors' donations help maintain the house and garden.
