About the museum
The Musée d'art et d'histoire de Lisieux was created by merging two museums. The first, a fine arts museum, was founded in 1833 thanks to François Guizot, which makes it one of the oldest museums in France. The second, the Musée du Vieux Lisieux, dates from 1930.
It occupies one of the last half-timbered houses in the town, at 38 boulevard Pasteur. It is part of the network of museums of the Lisieux Normandie urban area. According to the département's tourism portal, it reopened in 2013 with a new presentation of its collections.
The visit traces the history of Lisieux, from the Gallo-Roman town to the town of half-timbered houses that was largely destroyed during the Second World War. It also presents the much-admired decorative ceramics of the Pré d'Auge, and paintings by recognised artists such as Eugène Boudin or Gustave Courbet, as well as local artists who depicted the Normandy landscape.
