About the museum
The L.A.C. opened in summer 1991 in Sigean. Dutch painter Piet Moget and his daughter Layla transformed a huge former wine cellar of around 2000 m², spread over two levels, into an exhibition space for contemporary artists. The building retains traces of its winemaking past, and some of the vats have become small rooms for drawings and more intimate works.
In the 1990s, the venue showed artists who were still little known at the time; the works were chosen by Piet and Layla Moget, often out of friendship or personal enthusiasm. A retrospective in 2000 marked a milestone and confirmed the venue's ties with Northern Europe.
After Piet Moget's death, Layla Moget chairs the L.A.C. association, curates the exhibitions and runs the education department. A selection from the Moget family collection, which includes works by Karel Appel, Dado and Geer van Velde, is shown during the exhibitions. The venue is supported by the DRAC Occitanie, the Occitanie Region, the Aude department and the town of Sigean.
