About the museum
The Musée des Corbières in Sigean is a municipal museum offering a broad historical overview of the Corbières, from prehistory to the 19th century. The town's website presents it as a place for culture, leisure and discovering local heritage.
On the first floor, the route covers prehistory from the Mousterian period to the Bronze Age. The second floor is devoted to archaeology: the collections from the Pech-Maho oppidum shed light on the lives of Iron Age inhabitants, including writing, funerary rites, craftsmanship and Mediterranean trade. Gallo-Roman objects come mainly from cremation burials and tombs, and the early Middle Ages are represented by 6th-century funerary objects, including Visigothic earrings from the Aspres cemetery.
An exhibition titled “Corbières, frontière ou passage ?” covers the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, tracing the evolution of the border between the Kingdom of France and Aragon from the 13th to the 17th century. The route ends with an overview of trades tied to local resources, such as salt, fishing and wine-growing, showing daily life in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The museum also offers guided tours that combine the museum with the Pech-Maho oppidum, as well as thematic exhibitions and free evening events, such as Museum Night.
