About the museum

The Maison de l’Huître is located at the port of Larros, one of the seven oyster ports of Gujan-Mestras, which is considered the capital of oyster farming in the Arcachon Basin. It introduces visitors to the profession of oyster farmer, breeding techniques and the history of the oyster over the centuries.

The visit lasts about one hour and takes place in three stages: a film, a guided tour of the different air-conditioned rooms, then an outdoor trail that visitors explore at their own pace. The museum tells the shared history of the oyster and the Arcachon Basin: for centuries, local people simply gathered oysters from the natural beds, until these beds gradually disappeared, giving rise to oyster farming.
