About the museum

The Maison de la Bataille grew out of the idea of showing the large model of the Bataille de la Peene, also known as the third Battle of Cassel, in one of the villages where the fighting took place. In 1677, the armies of William of Orange and Louis XIV clashed there, in an episode linked to the incorporation of part of Flanders into France.

The museum opened in April 2007. Its building, whose silhouette recalls a Flemish barn, houses a 12-square-metre model of the battlefield, complemented by a timeline presenting the forces involved and the consequences of the battle. A 50-square-metre screening room shows a film in French and Dutch about how the battle unfolded.

Outside, a teaching garden brings together around seventy plant species that predate the 18th century: field plants, kitchen garden, aromatic and medicinal herbs, and flowers. The visit can be extended with a walk through the village of Noordpeene or along the battle trails as far as the memorial obelisk between Zuytpeene and Noordpeene.

The project was funded by local authorities and the state, and the museum today runs thanks to the association’s volunteers. It also has a shop devoted to Flanders and tourist information about the Westhoek.
