About the museum

The museum is housed in a former 18th-century presbytery, a typical Flemish house. It was the home of photographer Jeanne Devos (1902–1989) and of Abbé Lamps, who had taken her in and introduced her to photography. She is considered the first professional woman photographer in Flanders. Both are buried in the garden of the property.

In 1978 Jeanne Devos sold the house to the municipality of Wormhout on a life annuity (viager) and left it her possessions and collections. The furniture, tapestry, floor tiles, decoration and paintings are those of houses of the past, and many objects have remained in their original places. The visit thus evokes the daily life of a Flemish house.

The museum displays objects of Flemish tradition gathered by the photographer, old photographic equipment and cameras, and stereoscopic photographs that give an impression of depth. Her collection of some 100,000 photographs taken between 1952 and 1979 is not held at the museum but at the iconographic centre of the Wormhout media library, where visitors can consult albums of portraits, ceremonies and views of Flemish villages. The museum is run by the Comité flamand de France.
