About the museum
The Maison du Pays de Voltaire, at 26 Grand'rue, is a former theatre built by Léonard Racle in a warehouse and opened in 1776 in the presence of the actor Le Kain. Voltaire, who had settled in Ferney, liked to stage his own plays, and this hall recalls the role of theatre in village life.
Today owned by the town, the building houses Ferney-Voltaire's cultural and events centre. It also contains the Atelier du Livre, a museum devoted to the history of letterpress printing, with a reconstructed 18th-century press, historic presses from the 19th and 20th centuries and an area devoted to printing type.
