About the museum
The Mémorial de la Shoah in Drancy is a museum-memorial located opposite the Cité de la Muette, in Drancy, Seine-Saint-Denis. Built in the 1930s as a housing estate, the complex was used from 1940 to hold prisoners of war, then from August 1941 until summer 1944 as an internment and transit camp for Jews in France. The site has been listed as a historic monument since 2001.
Opened in 2012, the memorial was designed by Swiss architect Roger Diener as a sober building oriented toward the estate. It is part of the network of the Mémorial de la Shoah. It houses the permanent exhibition, educational rooms, a conference hall with about 150 seats and a temporary exhibition space.
The permanent exhibition traces the history of the camp from 1941 to 1944, the daily life of the internees, the organization of convoys to the extermination camps, the fate of children and the memory of the site after the war. It draws on archives, photographs, a relief model of the camp, objects belonging to internees and about 30 video testimonies.
