About the museum

The Mémorial des déportations occupies a blockhouse built in 1943 by the German army at the foot of Fort Saint-Jean, opposite the old quarters of the Vieux-Port destroyed during the Second World War. The building was part of the defensive system intended to prevent an Allied landing in Provence.

Inaugurated in 1995 as the Mémorial des camps de la mort, on the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of the camps, it closed in 2012 because of works around Fort Saint-Jean and the Mucem and of upgrades to welcome the public. It reopened on December 20, 2019 under its current name, with a renewed route.

The route evokes the men, women and children arrested and deported because they were Jewish or persecuted as political opponents, resistance fighters, hostages or “suspects.” Films and testimonies detail the events of 1943: round-ups of Jewish communities, the evacuation and destruction of the old quarters, and the deportations. Conceived as a preview exhibition, its content is set to grow over the years. The site is attached to the Musée d'histoire de Marseille.
