About the museum

The museum is built around the collection of Jacques Doucet (1853–1929), a couturier and pioneer of haute couture and a great art lover. After selling an important group of 18th-century works in 1912, he turned to avant-garde art and acquired paintings that are now among the most famous of the 20th century. On his death the inheritance passed to his widow and sister, and then to the Dubrujeaud family.

In 1968 the collection returned to Jean Angladon-Dubrujeaud (1906–1979), an Avignon painter known as Jean Angladon. Together with his wife Paulette Martin, he kept a coherent group of works and enriched it with older pieces. The childless couple moved into the mansion on rue Laboureur in 1977, where they set up a museum.

The museum opened to the public on November 15, 1996, as the Musée Angladon – Collection Jacques Doucet. After the deaths of the two founders, the Fondation de France created the Fondation Angladon-Dubrujeaud to run the institution.

On the first floor, visitors discover paintings by Degas, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Sisley, Modigliani and Picasso. The upper floor is arranged as a private residence, with themed rooms devoted to European and East Asian decorative arts, from the Renaissance to the 18th century.
