About the museum
The Palais du Roure is a 15th-century town mansion in the heart of Avignon. In 1469, Pierre Baroncelli, who had come from Florence, bought a tavern and neighbouring houses there and merged them into a family residence. The building remained linked to this family; in the 19th century Marquis Folco de Baroncelli-Javon owned it. Frédéric Mistral, who frequented the house, called it “palais du Roure”, meaning “oak palace”; it then became a centre of the Félibrige.
After the palace was sold in 1908, it fell into serious disrepair. Jeanne de Flandreysy saved it in 1918 and established a centre for Mediterranean culture there. In 1936 she married the archaeologist Émile Espérandieu, and the Fondation Flandreysy-Espérandieu was created. The City of Avignon later inherited the building. It has been a listed historic monument since November 19, 1941.
The collections cover the history and society of the region and are now open to the public. The museum is free of charge and offers family visits, activity-workshop visits for children aged 6 to 12, and themed visits for teenagers and adults.
