About the museum
The departmental archaeological space is in the heart of the village of Montrozier, dominated by its castle, about twenty minutes east of Rodez. Run by the Aveyron Departmental Council, it functions as an interpretation center devoted to discovering and promoting the archaeology of the department.
The exhibitions draw on nearby archaeological sites. These include the Roquemissou rock shelter, used by hunter-gatherers and later by farming communities between 12,000 and 2,000 BCE, and the Argentelle Gallo-Roman villa, excavated in the 19th century by Abbé Cérès. Occupied from the 1st century BCE to the 4th century CE, this villa is considered the largest and most luxurious in the department. The finds from it are displayed at the museum.
The museum also displays notable pieces, such as the Planet Stele from the Copper Age, the articulated bronze belt from Sébrazac and objects from the moats of the Bertholène castle. The site also offers family workshops during school holidays.
