About the museum
The museum occupies the former church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Espalion, a Gothic building from the 15th and 16th centuries listed as a historic monument in 1979. It brings together two collections: the Musée Joseph Vaylet, devoted to the folk arts and traditions of Rouergue, and the Musée du Scaphandre.
The Musée du Scaphandre was founded in 1980 on the initiative of private individuals. It honours two inventors born in Espalion, the mining engineer Benoît Rouquayrol and the naval lieutenant Auguste Denayrouze, whose compressed-air apparatus of 1864 is considered the first modern autonomous diving suit. It traces roughly two centuries of diving history with more than 400 items: historic and modern diving suits, diving equipment, models and documents.
The Joseph Vaylet section presents everyday life and objects from the region, including a reconstructed traditional Rouergat interior.
