About the museum
Béruges is a hilltop village on a rocky spur at the confluence of the Boivre and the Coudre, west of Poitiers. The site has been occupied since the Neolithic. In the Gallic period it formed an oppidum, and from the 1st century a Gallo-Roman villa was established there.
The archaeological museum displays finds ranging from prehistory to the Middle Ages, mainly from the village’s Gallic oppidum and Gallo-Roman villa. Visits are led by members of the association that runs the museum. Next door, the archaeological garden contains 1st-century Gallo-Roman vaults, a lapidary museum and remains of the murus gallicus that surrounded the oppidum. An ancient garden is tended by association members and pupils of the village school.
A waymarked trail across the oppidum allows visitors to continue the discovery on foot; it is recommended to walk it after visiting the archaeological garden.
