About the museum
The Musée de la machine à coudre in Rouillé is based on a private collection assembled from 1964 onwards. It is run by a sewing machine repair workshop, the clinique de la machine à coudre (sewing machine clinic), founded in 1978.
The collection numbers more than 300 machines, the oldest dating from the 1830s. It is supplemented by old needles, lithographs, historical accessories, photographs and advertising posters.
Rare pieces include a richly decorated Florida model from 1871 and a Comtesse machine from 1889, of which only 64 were made.
