About the museum
The museum building housed the royal bailiwick court and the town’s prisons from 1700, then the Haut-Vivarais seneschal’s court and, from 1792 to 1963, the commercial court. Visitors could see 18th-century dungeons and the former courtroom.
The collections range from the Gallo-Roman period to the present day. They cover local and regional history as well as Annonay’s technical and industrial heritage: the craftsmanship of the tawers and tanners, the first balloon flights of the Montgolfier brothers, plans and models by Marc Seguin. One room recreates a 19th-century Vivarais kitchen.
The museum also displays ceramics, furniture, coins, works by local artists including the draughtsman Louis Sabattier, and a room of sacred art. The museum bears the “Musée de France” label.
