About the museum

The château of Tournon, largely built in the 15th and 16th centuries, overlooks the Rhône in the heart of the town. It was the residence of the counts of Tournon, one of the most powerful families of the Ardèche. Its architecture combines medieval and defensive features with hints of the Italian Renaissance, visible in the stained glass and the mullioned windows of the main building. The wall of the medieval keep, known as the Château Saint-Just, is the last remnant of the oldest part of the building.

When the last descendant died in the 17th century, an inventory revealed the family’s wealth: a library of 800 volumes, paintings, ancient medals, statues and tapestries. The château was then turned into a prison. The prison was closed in the 1930s, and the Monuments historiques department restored the building, which was listed as a historic monument in 1938.

In 1928, the Union générale des Rhodaniens opened a Musée du Rhône, first in the chapel and then in the château. It was organised around navigation, dams, bridges and river boatmen, a theme the current museum has kept in several rooms. Gifts and bequests enriched the collections with works by artists such as Raoul Dufy, André Lhote and Marcel Gimond. The museum now holds the “Musée de France” label, and the château the “Vignobles et découvertes” label.
