About the museum

The Musée cévenol opened on September 5, 1963. Across some 1,500 m², its collections, from prehistory to the present day, present the territory of the Causses and the Cévennes, from the northern Aigoual massif to the garrigues of the Hérault, from Millau to Uzès.

The first objects were collected as early as 1961, with the aim of creating a museum of Cévennes popular arts and traditions. This collection of ethnology and traditions is the largest; it evokes the region’s agricultural and industrial past: workshops of clog-makers and coopers, tools from the chestnut groves, sheep farming and silkworm rearing.

The textile collection illustrates the knitwear trade, with wool, silk and nylon, as well as weaving, knitting and embroidery, which were widespread in the southern Cévennes. The arts and literature collection evokes the lives of residents through objects, drawings and books. The association “Les Amis du Musée Cévenol” supports the museum.
